As with last weeks shot, you noticed some hills in the back ground of the sunrise shot.
People were telling me that Las Vegas was flat but said nothing about what was around it.
Well this is Red Rock Canyon which is to the west of Las Vegas and is around a 30 minute drive to the visitors centre.
All I can say is wow, this place is amazing!
I haven’t much luck in finding out the the geological history but literally wherever you the scene is different and this is just one shot of many I took in the area.
Just on that last line, you can see where various “ages” of rock have been just with that reddish colour line in the left hand range.
Thankfully the conservation of the area was completed in 1967 and in 1990 special legislation was passed so that the area is fully protected and has funding for its upkeep.
There is also a tourist road through the park which gets up close and personal with the hills and it is brilliant.
It is also part of the Mojave Desert and as you can see it is very dry! The average rainfall per year is only 150mm.
A funny side note is that there are wild burros (wild donkey’s) and one morning I turned up in the dark to be greeted by six of them hanging around one of the gates to the canyon.
Unfortunately you are not allowed to feed them at all and it attracts a US$500.00 fine!
